SMG Youth Dance Company provides a dedicated space for budding young performers aged 7 years+ to realise their potential within a nurturing, supportive and encouraging environment. We offer a space for dancers to explore new dance styles, develop skills and showcase their work through various performance and competitive opportunities throughout the season. SMG Youth Dance Company performers have appeared at Regional and National showcases such as; CYD? Super Convention, Calling U Out Events, U Dance Regional NW, Eurovision, Dance with US Festival, and Leap Dance Festival.
Located in St. Helens, Merseyside, we deliver a bespoke educational experience for every dancer. Whether you are stepping onto the floor for the first time, dancing for the joy of movement, or preparing for a professional career in the performing arts, our company supports your journey with excellence and passion.

CREATE an environment for young performers to train, develop new skills and build confidence and creativity.
CONNECT dancers to the wider dance community, whether that's in the studio, creating lifelong friendships, or by introducing dancers to a range of performance opportunities, competitive dance events, and workshops led by industry professionals.
GROW as creative performers, learning valuable transferrable life skills that students can take into future careers whether they are pursuing performing arts as a career, or taking a different avenue. Â With SMGYDC dancers are encouraged to develop creativity, learn to collaborate and communicate with their peers.Â

MEET SOPHIE
Sophie Owen is the Founder of SMG Youth Dance Company. Â A passionate teacher, choreographer, and creative practitioner dedicated to inspiring confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of dance in young performers.

Sophie began her dance journey at her local dance school before continuing her vocational training at Central Performing Arts College (formerly Centre Pointe). She then moved to London to study BA (Hons) Dance Studies (Choreography) at Middlesex University, where she discovered her passion for choreography and creating original work. Alongside her studies, Sophie was accepted onto an  internship with B-Hybrid Dance, gaining invaluable experience working alongside a professional dance company in rehearsals and performances.

In 2017, Sophie founded SMG Dance Collective, creating a platform for dancers and artists to collaborate, create, and perform. The collective was selected for the  Studio Wayne McGregor FreeSpace Programme, where Sophie further developed her choreographic practice and artistic voice. Today, the collective offers open classes, workshops, and performance opportunities across both live and digital platforms.

Committed to continuing her professional development, Sophie went on to complete an MA in Creative Dance Education at the University of Salford, further strengthening her knowledge of inclusive, creative, and learner-centred dance practice.

In 2023, Sophie established SMG Youth Dance Company to provide ambitious young dancers with high-quality training and meaningful performance opportunities. The company is built on the belief that every young performer deserves the opportunity to realise their potential in a supportive, collaborative, and inspiring environment. Through training, competitions, and performances, SMG Youth Dance Company encourages its members to develop not only as skilled dancers but also as confident, creative, and resilient individuals.
